Hey there internet, The Writing Writer here for some more webcomics info. This week I’m going to be looking at Gunnerkrigg Court
Gunnerkrigg Court is an ongoing series by Tom Siddell about Annie Carver, a young girl living in a magical boarding school that happens to be the center of a cascade of bizarre happenings and peoples. Even the secrets of the universe are locked somewhere within its walls. The book follows Annie, her best friend Kat, a massive, demon like creature trapped in a stuffed animal named Reynard, and their friends as they try to uncover the mysteries of the court.
There is a whole lot going on in this book: science vs. magic, the power of ideas, bildungsroman, and political shenanigans. You want it; chances are it’s tucked away somewhere. When anything tries to do even a quarter of what Gunnerkrigg does, it does one of two things. It either implodes and falls apart or becomes something epic. Obviously, Gunnerkrigg managed to do the latter yet to do so it had to spread itself out, keeping the pace at a slow, steady march.
The comic has been going consistently since 2005 and now has over 40 chapters each roughly 20 to 30 pages and it is still nowhere near a conclusion. I’ve been reading Gunnerkrigg since 09 and only a fraction of the mysteries have been touched upon. Though don’t let the size or pacing keep you from diving right in. Each chapter feels like an episode rather than a piece of an overarching story so each one feels self contained with a clear beginning and end.
Honestly, it took me a while to really sink my teeth in this comic. With just how expansive and complex a story it is, it was hard to feel welcome. It was like walking into a party and not knowing anyone there. But comic does a good job of explaining itself along the way so it didn’t take long to get acquainted with Annie and the world she inhabits. Now, Gunnerkrigg is part of my Mon,Wed,Fri net surfing routine and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
If you want to support the creator, you can buy Gunnerkrigg Court volumes and other products here. I’m partial to the Reynard plush, he’s just adorable when he’s pissed.
