I have been thinking long and hard about what I like best about Marvel. There are multiple things that Marvel can do and does that no other company can match, and I admire them for this. One such idea is that of the Illuminati team. In Marvel continuity this team was established after the Kree Skrull war (however in real-time, the team was created more than 30 years later in 2005). Despite having to do a retcon of events and characters to make it fit, the Illuminati offers a unique aspect of super hero stories that hasn’t been told.
The team goes beyond that of secret society, becoming a government of super beings. The initial team comprised of Tony Stark, Black Bolt, Reed Richards, Namor, Xavier, and Doctor Strange (Black Panther refused membership). While very little of this team has been featured in Marvel comics the implications and the ideas of this are staggering. This all came to light in the recent New Avengers AvX tie in, as the current roster of the team meets to discuss the current crisis. What surprises me is that so many of these members show up. This is evident of Marvel’s dedication to preserve the strength and importance of this team. This team and these characters have total control and influence over the Marvel universe, and can exercise their power in a single meeting.
I guess what I’m trying to say is only in the Marvel universe could 6 people meet together to discuss how to impact the future of their universe and lead their communities. Even with strife and chaos abounding, these heroes still meet up for a greater purpose. Even DC’s pantheon couldn’t do this (well frankly, Batman could do it by himself). The Illuminati is one thing that I never thought Marvel has done enough. Yes they appeared in AvX, but as fan service. It would be fantastic if their was a crisis or an ongoing series focusing solely on this team.
What do you think of the Illuminati? Are you as inspired by this team as I am? Let me know!
Until the next time, live long and prosper.
