Ravingnerd Reviews: Before Watchmen- Rorschach

This comic is the first comic that has inspired midnight store openings in quite a while. And as a nerd, it is refreshing to see everyone so excited by this series. Of course many of the people who read this series probably haven’t read the entire thing, but whatever gets people into a comic book store, right? Brian Azzarello is a brilliant writer, but many people (including myself) questioned his ability to successfully helm Rorschach after being uninspiring on Comedian. Here’s what I liked about the issue:

1. Lee Bermejo’s art is vivid and alive, the perfect art for the story.
2. The comic opens with the signature diary entry form.
3. There are bad guys. Real bad guys. Ones that will come into play through the series no doubt.

Rating before reading: 9
Rating after reading: 7

While it didn’t live up to expectations, it was a solid read. My one complaint would be that nothing really happened. The set up was fine, but most of the issue was spent with Rorschach losing. This being said, it played out, read, and looked like what a Rorschach series would look like. I can’t make any real complaints other than the that one. So it might not be the best of the line, but it is definitely solid and definitely worth reading.

Until the next time, live long and prosper.
