I’m at a Place Called Vertigo

While it’s no secret that I’m a huge DC fan, and that DC eclipses most of what I read and shapes my perception of comic books, I feel it’s time to give Vertigo some thought. Vertigo has grown into a lot over the years, and produced some fabulous stories, Flex Mentallo and Y: The Last Man to name a few. Aside from having well done limited (or semi limited runs) they also have many fantastic on going series’. Hellblazer is still the best glimpse of Constantine (for those who knew he was a Vertigo Star), Fables has had smashing success, spawning multiple spin offs and even inspiring a television show (Once Upon a Time, for anyone who didn’t know). But you knew all this, and if you didn’t, you could probably all get this information off of a Wikipedia page. What I’m really here to talk about are the tour of duties some DC stars have had on Vertigo. Including Green Arrow, Swamp Thing, Shade, Animal Man, and more.

My question is, what DC characters could be given new life in a Vertigo titles? What characters could thrive in that environment? I have comprised some thoughts.

Catman: Though a killer, he struggles with right and wrong, making him more of an anti-hero and less of a villain. This seems almost ideal for a Vertigo title. Catman is currently removed from The New 52, but is still in the popular eye do to the ever successful, and ever missed, Secret Six.

Doctor Mid-NIte: A less likely and less obvious choice, but Doc was always my favorite member of the rebooted JSA. His devotion to his religion, his unique skill set, and the over all feel of the character could make for some very serious, provocative, and dynamic stories. Since his appearance in both the New 52 and on Earth 2 are unlikely.

Hourman: While we are talking about unlikely JSA characters that Ravingnerd is overly fond of, Hourman could even offer unique Vertigo quality. Also less likely to appear in the New 52 or Earth 2 Hourman’s powers come from a drug itself. An ongoing series dedicated to a man who is literally addicted to his power sound right up Vertigo’s ally. I could actually come up with a pretty fantastic script.

Frankenstein: His most recent stint in the main stream DCU is coming to a close, but it doesn’t mean he has to come to an end. The character is rooted in horror. And if things were changed up a bit, he could be brought back to life in a Vertigo limited or on going. There was an intended joke in there some where.

The Doom Patrol: It’s always been an oddball team, and has had many bad incarnations and runs. Vertigo held some great Doom Patrol stories (partly-mostly-all because of Grant Morrison). It is unlikely they will ever appear in the New 52, but there’s nothing stopping DC from utilizing that team elsewhere.

These are just some of the many characters that could be benefitted from a Vertigo appearance. Hell characters like Green Arrow could be improved if moved into the Vertigo line, since his titles going nowhere.

Is there anyone you would like to see on a Vertigo title? Are they missing from the New 52? Would you like them removed from the New 52? Sound off and let me know, I’m dying for some feedback.

Until the next time, hello hello.
